Altering Filigree with Color and Collage

Bronze Filigree Yields Unique Results

I’ve been a fan of filigree, brass, steel and aluminum and have used it for many years, and in a wide variety of projects. Lately, however, I’ve come across a filigree line with a unique combination of alloys and a finish that is giving me a lot of new ideas and possibilities than I have had with the others. Unlike the solid stamped brass, this filigree is thinner and less rigid, can be shaped without metal fatigue and has a mottled dark finish that accepts a variety of tinting techniques.

Tinting Filigree with Powder Only-A Soft Approach

Materials for Tinting Filigree

  • Makeup sponges
  • Paper plates
  • Clear Nail Polish or Liquid sealant that dries clear
  • Different shades of pearl-ex powders or you can try and use old powdered eye shadow

We do offer a tinting kit. You get small bottles of blue, pink, green, silver, gold & copper, plus a non-toxic liquid sealer. This comes with 6 filigree pieces.

Use the paper plates as your work surface. 1 for holding the filigree, the other for putting out small batches of powder.

Pick out the colors you want to try and put small portions on to a clean paper plate. Put your filigree on another plate. With a brush, lightly coat the filigree with your clear liquid, being careful not to clog up any openings in the filigree.

Quickly, while the liquid is still wet, dab a sponge into the powder and very lightly dust thin layers of powder onto the metal with quick swipes. You don’t want it to make a solid cover, just add a tint and accent detail. You can mix colors on the filigree by applying the powder in different directions, thus adding a thin layer of color on the inside edges of the metal, or accent just some parts of the design in different colors.

After you are satisfied, let it dry. Test how well the powder has sealed to the surface by wiping a soft cloth over the piece and see if if, and how much, comes off. You can always apply a clear sealant over the piece if you have problems.

I recommend using a very light color with this dark bronze finish. Light blues, pearl white, pinks…even gold shows up well.

Glass Bottles w/Brush

We do have 1/2 oz bottles with brush. Bittle is 2-3/8" tall x 1-3/8" dia at the base, holds 15ml (1/2 oz), has a black logo and subtle text, and a 2-1/4" long black rubber-clad handle with bristles that reach close to the bottom of the bottle. $1.50 ea

Bronze Filligree, Collage Version

Polymer Clay inlay on bronze filigree. Filigree painted with glass paint, polymer clay tinted with pearl-ex, and front of filigree decorated with vintage jewelry pieces.

Brass Filigree with Vintage Collage Elements

Using the techniques described in our E-Book "Making Pins and Pendants from Broken Jewelry", we've taken brass filigree, tinted it with pearl-ex, then wired on pieces of vintage jewelry. We've embellished any odd pieces with rhinestones, and paint.

Painting/Tinting with Nail Polish... Thin it down and go from vivid to soft!

Using Nail Enamel on Filigree

  • Makeup sponges
  • Paper plates
  • Clear Nail Polish
  • Nail Polish Thinner
  • At least 5 or 6 shades of Nail Polish

Using nail polish will give you as subtle of a result as the colors you choose, so pick the areas to paint carefully. Some filigree have repeating patterns that look great when accented with color.

Since it is acetone-based, use in a ventilated area, and keep old bottles.. you can pour or mix several colors into an old nail polish bottle to get even nicer effects. Trim the brush to a point for fine detail.

I have had the best result with the cheapest (like under a dollar) nail enamel, and do prefer the look that a metallic or pearl finish gives me. I don't suggest you try any glitter-based paint, the flakes just clog up the openings.

Using Glass or Metal Paint (Acetone-Based)

We do offer small bottles of blue, red, green, purple, yellow & Pink. A little bit goes a long way. You will need disposable brushes, or use a trimmed feather.

I found a fabulous glass/metal paint that is acetone-based. It has very few colors, but they are vivid, come in opaque and translucent, but are hard to find.

They do mix well, and I’ve mixed them with inexpensive nail polish for a good result.

Since it is acetone-based, expect to use a brush only once, unless you can pour or mix your paints into an old nail polish bottle (I think there are hobby paints with the same properties. ). You can trim the polish bottle brush to a point for fine detail.

Using glass paint will not give you a subtle result, so pick the areas to paint carefully. Some filigree have repeating patterns that look great when accented with color.

The glass paint is very thin and takes to the surface very well, doesn’t wear off. But it hard to find.

Materials

  • Makeup sponges
  • Paper plates
  • Clear Nail Polish or Liquid sealant that dries clear
  • Small glass palettes to mix colors
  • Make sure paint all has the same chemical base

Exclusive to NotJustPartz... Original Hand-Tinted Brass Filigree Butterflies

We've been developing a series of unique techniques that will tint, dye and add a shimmering finish to our Brass Filigree Butterflies. We're thrilled to introduce them!

Tinted Butterflies

This set of butterflies has been finished on both sides with a single color. The surface is shimmery, yet matt with a coating that doesn't transfer to clothing or hands. The surface color variations are a result of our tinting and blotting process, which we found to yield the most hardy, yet beautiful finish. Choose Color family. No two are exactly alike.

Aluminum Filigree Pieces

This set of butterflies has been given a two-tone finish on the front to bring out the details in the surface. Finished on both sides, the color blending was quite a challenge, but the result is fabulous. Same surface treatment as the single tint. Choose Color family. No two are exactly alike.

We are in the process of putting out a project book which details several of the techniques we used to get such a unique finish. We will also offer a "kit" with some of the more hard-to-find materials.
