Each Bead is Hand Crafted and Will Show Variations
We're currently using solid black, dark blue, purple and metallic silver as base layers for the beads. The mica powders (we layer 6 or 7 colors) metal leaf and the inclusions are all applied by hand. The organic nature of the resulting pattern is one of the major attractions of this technique. We make the beads in batches to keep the surface colors similar.
The bead strand above used layers of mica (7 in this mix) with metallic leaf accents. When viewed up close you can see the layers of color muted by the clay itself. Beads will vary in size and shap, although we do weigh the clay used for each bead. When we apply the surface treatment, the size of the bead will change slightly. We do offer the beads in several sizes, and do create a line of graduated beads. The largest bead runs about 25mm. We're in the process of developing a set of measurements to help you when you place your order. (raku beads alternate.. and give a lovely effect)
The bead strand above uses fewer colors, but adds stronger metallic shades and adds more layers of leafing. The result is a more metallic copper/gold/silver dominance, which goes very well on black. This technique will not yield the dimensional irridescence as seen in the examples at the top of the page. By adding green, blue and black leafing foil, we can create many differnt types of metallic finishes.
The strand above was made with a slightly different technique. Using only 2 mica tones, but adding gold and silver embossing powder, and a variety of metallic leaf, gives a much more subtle effect. The clay was textured to break up the leaf before the final bead rolling process began.
Earring pairs to mix and match! Beads for earrign pairs are made at the same time and use the same technique and finish. We try to make sure you get a pair of beads that are similar in color and design. You may choose from the base colors featured above.
